British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts down to the depot... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of the group following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," he commented. "They were part of thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our security, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in both countries.
