EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
