Security Advice for Defence Personnel

In a recent interview on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed reports that MoD officials have been instructed not to discuss classified material while riding in China-made vehicles.

He explained that the MoD is “examining” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but noted that security is a concern in every contemporary vehicles.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and Chinese ones represent a tiny fraction.
But whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any kind of vehicle, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in protected areas. That’s a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.

When it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: ‘That’s precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Wider Defence Background

This revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and bring chaos to public transit.

Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” action by defence officials.

This broader defence environment highlights the significance of strong protocols and vigilance in every aspects of government operations, including vehicle use to communication practices.
