The Global Health Body Raises Warning Over Acute Lack of Weight-Loss Jabs

Fewer than a tenth of individuals eligible to benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy are able to get them, caution the global health agency as it releases its initial recommendations on the drugs.

Considering more than one billion people worldwide currently classified as obese, it is advocating for broader and more equitable access to these injectable treatments.

Per estimates, in excess of 2,000,000,000 could be obese by 2030 unless action is taken.

"The latest guidance recognises that excess weight is a long-term condition that can be treated with thorough and lifelong treatment," said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, constrained manufacturing, and supply-chain constraints are major barriers to universal access to the jabs that can aid individuals in losing considerable body mass, notes the organization.

GLP-1 Therapy Scarcity

Even under the current best projected case, the manufacturing of such drugs could only cover around 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, as stated by the health organization.

The guideline urges governments and firms to increase access, via approaches including voluntary licensing.

Exclusive production rights on a key compound – the main component of the drug Wegovy – is scheduled to end in multiple countries in 2026.

How Weight-Loss Jabs Operate

GLP-1 drugs imitate a biological compound to reduce digestion speed, curb appetite and boost feelings of fullness so users consume fewer calories.

People commonly see weight reduction after several weeks of starting on the weekly injections.

Research points to users may regain a significant portion after a year of discontinuing the medication, when their normal food cravings come back.

To be overweight or obese increases your likelihood for contracting health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease, brain attack, and certain malignancies.

Excess weight affects people in all nations and was associated with 3.7 million deaths worldwide in 2024, as per the health agency.
